The program is being offered at no charge to attendees and includes continuing education credits for nurses, social workers/counselors and long-term care administrators. Community members who are not seeking continuing education are also strongly encouraged to attend this informative talk.
Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this program, participants will be able to provide an introduction to military culture including special service considerations of active duty vs. reserve forces and issues faced by veterans of various service eras; identify and discuss ethical concerns related to serving military members and veterans, including reporting of mental health treatment and understanding clinician-implicit bias around military service; identify and share resources available to service members, veterans and their families, including VA and non-VA sources, as well as additional available resources.
About the Speakers
Jeremy Suttles is a Community Engagement and Partnership Coordinator at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System where he works on Engagement with community partners and coalitions, providing trainings and technical assistance on a variety of topics, and suicide prevention. His 21 years of field experience also brought him a host of skills in mental health, training, suicide prevention, and veterans such as strategic planning, program management, and public relations.
Justin Coates is a Community Engagement and Partnership Coordinator at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. Justin pursued a career in military social work following five years spent as a paratrooper in the U.S. Army. He specializes in providing trauma recovery to veterans struggling with PTSD and moral injury, as well as those diagnosed with severe mental illness. Justin’s current role as a CEPC involves educating local coalitions on military culture and the unique needs faced by the nation’s veterans.
