Most cannot imagine that children need hospice care, but the reality is we provide care for patients of all ages with life limiting illnesses, including those under 21 years of age. Caring for pediatric patients can be some of the most intensive work done by our clinical staff and the impact for families who have a child on hospice is profound. Hospice of Northwest Ohio is the only area hospice with a specialized pediatric hospice team. In fact, other hospice programs in the community refer their pediatric patients to us.
This crucial care is provided by our specially trained team of nurses, social workers, hospice aides, chaplain and physician. Our team works closely with the child’s doctor to provide expert hospice care, support and guidance. Pediatric patients are eligible for concurrent hospice support, meaning insurance will cover palliative treatments like radiation, chemotherapy and experimental treatments, at the same time hospice care is provided. Hope is redefined because the child’s pain is lessened, symptoms are managed and the quality of life for the whole family is improved. When life is shortened, each day is a gift.
A key benefit of having the expertise of Hospice wrapped around the child and family is that it allows the parents and siblings to be family and not the sole caregivers. This holistic care often enables the child to remain at home, surrounded by the people and things he/she loves. What seems impossible becomes possible.
