Why Become a Hospice Volunteer?

Posted by: Hospice of Northwest Ohio on Monday, January 6, 2025

As we start a new year, you might be looking for ways to give back or add value to our community. Hospice of Northwest Ohio volunteers make a positive difference in the lives of the patients and families they serve and are greatly appreciated by the Hospice team, as well.

Each year volunteers provide thousands of hours of service for our patients. In fact, as a Medicare-certified hospice, we are mandated to have at least 5% of our patient services hours provided by volunteers.

What if I have no healthcare experience?

Every volunteer receives training that provides knowledge and confidence prior to joining the Hospice of Northwest Ohio team. Topics include:

  • Understanding the Hospice philosophy of care
  • Knowing the boundaries when interacting with patients and families
  • Communicating with patients and families
  • Understanding basic health and safety precautions
  • Understanding patient confidentiality
  • Understanding the services provided by Hospice of Northwest Ohio

Volunteers benefit, too!

While our volunteers make a tremendous impact on the lives of our patients, families and employees, we hear time and again that they have gained:

  • Increased appreciation for life and what is important
  • Greater knowledge and a sense of peace about the end-of-life experience
  • Greater insight about diversity and the different perspectives among cultures
  • A sense of fulfillment and pride because of their contributions to the Hospice of Northwest Ohio mission
