Oxygen Safety in the Home

Supplemental oxygen may be used to help with breathing problems or shortness of breath. Having oxygen in the home creates some safety concerns.

Oxygen safety is a National Patient Safety Goal used to identify and address safety risks in a patient’s environment. Smoking (including electronic cigarettes, pipes or other smoking items) while using oxygen or smoking anywhere near an oxygen tank or oxygen generator can be very dangerous.

An area enriched with oxygen increases the risk of fire, which can cause severe burns or other injuries that could result in death. Smoking in the presence of oxygen places you, your family and your neighbors at risk. To ensure safety for you, your family, caregivers, pets and others, follow these safety tips:

  • Do not smoke or light matches in a room where oxygen is in use or stored
  • Do not adjust the flow rate of the oxygen without being instructed to by a medical professional
  • Make sure portable tanks are always kept in the upright position and secure in a holding rack or base
  • Follow instructions for cleaning or using equipment:
    • Change tubing as instructed
    • Check filters and routinely wash in warm water
  • For humidified oxygen, use distilled water only
  • Do not use Vaseline® or petroleum-based products when oxygen is in use due to the increased risk of combustion. If a lubricant is needed, a water-based product like KY Jelly® can be used
  • Post “NO SMOKING” and “Oxygen in Use” signs at the entrances to your home
  • Do not leave oxygen turned on when NOT in use
  • Do not use oxygen near open flames such as fireplaces, stoves, candles or gas appliances

Following these simple tips will help protect you, your family and your friends!
