We are told by our patients and families how thankful they are for their volunteer and what their presence has meant to them on the end-of-life journey. The simple acts of a patient and volunteer watching TV together, playing a game of chess, watching the birds outside, or making keepsakes for their families…the stories and experiences are endless.
But, what we also hear is how incredibly rewarding it is to be a volunteer! Time and again, our volunteers have told us they receive so much more than they give! What an incredible feeling that is.
Our volunteers are a priceless treasure. They are the best listeners. They provide a safe outlet for patients to share their concerns or fears that they may not otherwise do with anyone else. They provide support and respite to caregivers. They are another set of eyes and ears for our clinicians. They are talented, compassionate people who freely give of their time to brighten someone’s day.
This week is National Volunteer Appreciation Week; however, I want our volunteers to know that they are appreciated each and every day for all that they do!
