Support Hospice Care – Write Your Congressman!

Proposed cuts to the Medicare hospice benefit – if enacted – will affect the way hospices nationwide are able to provide care to patients, families and the community. A reduction in reimbursement over the next three years could impact staffing levels (patient to staff ratio); availability of care for the uninsured; extra services like massage, music and art therapy; important community outreach programs such as bereavement services and professional/medical education.

How Can You Help?

We encourage you to share your hospice story with your congressman. Nothing is more compelling than real life stories from those who have experienced hospice care! Please tell them why you feel hospice care was important to your family and then ask them block cuts to the Medicare Hospice budget now and in the future.

Members of Congress prefer to receive communication from their constituents by fax or electronically, directly through their own websites.

Please send a copy of your letter to Hospice of Northwest Ohio so we know what our congressmen are getting. This will help us in further communication with them as well.

Caregiving Workshops Being Offered

In an effort to help non-professional caregivers who are assisting with the needs of friends or family members who are suffering from a long-term, chronic illness or those who are frail or debilitated due to old age, Hospice of Northwest Ohio is offering a four-session workshop at various places and times throughout the community. The goal of the workshop, "Caring for the Caregiver:" Finding the Blessings in the Experience, is to help the caregivers find personal meaning in the caregiving experience----in effect---turning day-to-day chores into meaningful, memorable experiences.

Topics Covered in the Ongoing Series
Participants will learn how to:
Cope with changes, losses and life transitions;
Say what is important to friends and family;
Explore the spiritual aspects of caregiving;
Create positive caregiving experiences;
Talk about end-of-life care and make important decisions;
Know what to expect as caregiving becomes more complex;
Plan for the future.

For information on upcoming sessions and to register, please call Hospice of Northwest Ohio at 419-661-4001.

Memorial Walkway Open House

Anyone who purchases a brick or paver for either of Hospice of Northwest Ohio's Memorial Walkways is encouraged to attend a special open house held annually in September. Both the Perrysburg and Toledo Centers welcome donors, and any family or friends they wish to bring, to view the specially engraved bricks given in memory of their oved ones.

Memorial bricks can be purchased at any time throughout the year, but are installed in the walkways just once each summer. The deadline to purchase for installation is generally in early July for each year. Anyone with questions about the Walkways can call Beth Nowak at 419-931-3119.

Annual Memorial Service

Those who have lost loved ones going back about a year from each November -- through the Hospice of Northwest Ohio program -- will receive a mailed invitation to this annual, non-denominational service.
