Volunteers Are the Heart of Hospice
Hospice of Northwest Ohio volunteers represent all ages and life experiences. They are drawn to hospice work for a variety of reasons, but the characteristics that define and unite them are compassion and the desire to help. Their many skills are matched to important tasks within our mission.
Although volunteers may be called upon for unique, or one-time special projects, their responsibilities generally fall into the following categories:
- Home Care Volunteers provide respite for the caregiver, companionship for the patient and general support as needed.
- Inpatient Care Volunteers schedule a specific time weekly to visit patients and participate in a variety of supportive activities to enhance patients' daily living in the Hospice Centers, and to assist the staff in providing care.
- Bereavement Volunteers follow up by phone with bereaved family members to explain our bereavement support opportunities.
- Administrative Volunteers assume general office tasks, assist in medical records, compile admission packets, organize files and provide the Hospice team with a variety of clerical support services.
- Garden Volunteers use their "green thumb" skills to maintain indoor plants, arrange flowers and use general outdoor gardening skills to develop and maintain flower and vegetable beds.
- Musician Volunteers use their musical talents in voice or instruments to provide stimulation and enjoyment and enhance the quality of life in the Hospice Center.
- Speaker's Bureau Volunteers help educate the public about Hospice of Northwest Ohio by speaking to various groups in the community, and/or manning the Hospice exhibit at health fairs and other community events.
- Transportation Volunteers assist in transporting family members to the Centers for visits. Special arrangements may also be made for other needs.
- Teen Volunteers add a wonderful inter-generational component to the care provided to patients and families in the Hospice Center. They visit with patients, assist staff and help visitors and families in a variety of ways.
- Veterans volunteers who have served in the Armed Services provide unique support to veterans and their families.
